Support for the kangaroo industry from Ecological and Conservation NGOs

The kangaroo industry enjoys wide support from professional environmental NGO’s. A number of prominent NGO’s have policies in support of it including:

Wildlife Queensland does not oppose this sustainable wildlife industry as the programs are underpinned by science. In fact these programs ensure kangaroo populations remain sustainable, viable and that the rangelands environment and their wildlife are not threatened by unregulated kangaroo numbers which could lead to serious bio-diversity loss. This is not an emotive, hypothetical statement. At this very moment wallaroos (one of the commercially harvested species) are exerting pressure on the habitat of the nationally listed vulnerable yellow footed rock wallaby in the Grey Range area of western Queensland.

Australia has developed a comprehensive and rigorous management program for the four super-abundant species of kangaroos which are commercially harvested.  We believe these Management Programs represent world best practice and responds to our policy of ‘wise use’ of an abundant native animal, where it can be successfully harvested for human need.

These programs ensure the abundant species of  kangaroo populations remain sustainable and that the rangelands environment are not threatened by unregulated kangaroo numbers, which could lead to serious bio-diversity loss and the destruction of much of our local grasslands habitat.
